Strengthening the nervous system: a review of anti-stress drugs

Nervous activity is the basis of human life. It is the nervous system that is first formed in the womb of a woman during fetal development. Nerve impulses regulate our physical and mental activity, help us to be who we are, to develop, to become “better” or “worse.” And all diseases come from nerves. Remember this expression? And indeed it is. Why this happens, how to strengthen the nervous system, what medications you can use, and what actions to take to stay healthy and happy, we will tell you in this article.

Today's rhythm of life is a constant cycle of events, a “race”, during which each of us strives to complete a lot of tasks. Hence the eternal stress. And if we add here financial instability, problems in the family or at work... Often the nervous system simply cannot cope, which is fraught with neuroses and depression.

If you feel that you can’t cope on your own, and your nervous system is becoming more and more unstable every day, be sure to consult a doctor (neurologist, psychiatrist or psychologist) - he will select a sedative that will eliminate the problem and prevent negative consequences from developing.

Symptoms and diagnosis of sedative dependence

For a person holding a legal prescription, abuse or misuse of a sedative (or any other medication) is defined as taking that medication more often than prescribed and/or in larger quantities than prescribed. For a person who does not have a legal prescription, abuse occurs when any consumption occurs.

In some cases, people in both groups engage in abuse out of a desire to experience the euphoric effects caused by the barbiturate or benzodiazepine, which dissolve quickly in the bloodstream. However, in other cases, abuse results from a genuine desire to experience or enhance the therapeutic benefits of sedatives as hypnotics or sedatives.

The human brain adapts relatively quickly to altered GABA levels caused by barbiturates and benzodiazepines. Over the course of a few weeks or months, he will begin to view the presence of these drugs as an expected situation. When this brain switch occurs, the affected person may develop sedative addiction.

Addiction is different from addiction and can occur even in people who strictly follow their doctor's orders. When doctors recognize this condition, they can treat it and prevent its development. However, addiction is always present in a person who uses a sedative without proper medical supervision.

Common symptoms:

  • constant desire to take another dose;
  • deterioration of condition after discontinuation of therapy.

If symptoms are detected, you should immediately consult your doctor.

How to choose a sedative

Our list of nerve pills are over-the-counter medications that are prescribed for minor stress, have a gentle effect on the nervous system and mostly contain natural ingredients. Typically, such medications are used for mild insomnia, when a person is nervous before an important event, for problems at work, in his personal life - in general, with increased emotional stress. But if, during treatment with sedatives, anxiety does not go away after a week or two, you need to consult a doctor again - he will prescribe stronger drugs.

Plant-based sedatives (such as Persen, Novo-Passit) are indicated for patients with temporary anxiety. If a person is under stress for a long time and feels negative symptoms, but there is no reason for this, it is necessary to check the thyroid gland, donate blood for anemia, vitamin D, and undergo tests for anxiety disorders and depression. In parallel with taking sedatives, it is important to learn relaxation techniques and talk to a psychologist to work through your anxious thoughts. Substances based on plant extracts are considered mild sedatives. Mild sedatives have a cumulative effect, so it will take 2 to 3 weeks of regular therapy to see improvement. For this reason, it is recommended to wait before drawing conclusions regarding the effect of a particular drug.

If stress requires urgent intervention or it has an acute form, it is better to resort to the use of stronger drugs based on a synthetic active ingredient.

For example, the sedative Chamomile Extract has anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and mild sedative effects. Helps normalize the functioning of all types of metabolic processes. With long-term use, it increases the level of glycine in the body, thus reducing muscle spasms and relaxing the nervous system. A natural, mild sedative that helps to relax during neurosis and fall asleep during insomnia.

Peony tincture is the best sedative, which increases the body’s ability to resist hypoxia through its high content of organic acids, tannins, and phenols. Prescribed for vegetative-vascular dystonia and neuroses. Sedatives are contraindicated in cases of excessive weakness, increased drowsiness and arterial hypotension.

Dormiplant

A sedative made in Germany, which contains valerian and lemon balm. Dormiplant helps well with increased nervous excitability and problems falling asleep. Contraindications include intolerance to the components of the drug, as well as liver failure. Dormiplant tablets are easy to swallow because they are not very large, round, with beveled edges. You need to take sedative tablets twice a day (morning and evening), 2 pieces, regardless of meals. Those who have taken this remedy write that Dormiplant is an excellent help for sleep problems. And if a person gets full rest at night, then during the day he is less irritable and is in a good mood. Dormiplant is often prescribed by neurologists for severe stress. Sometimes patients have adverse reactions - nausea and abdominal pain.

In a hospital or at home?

It is easier to prevent a breakdown than to treat it. During a breakdown, not everyone knows how to calm a person down. Just a few years ago, to calm the patient, they poured a bucket of cold water on him, if, of course, there was cold water nearby. If this does not help, you need to contact an ambulance.

Screaming will not help; a person is not able to control his actions. A raised voice can only make things worse, which should not be allowed.

Everyone decides for themselves where it is better to treat the disease - in a hospital or at home. If, for example, the breakdown was caused by the situation in the family, then it would be logical to send the patient to the hospital. The psyche may simply not cope if this happens again.

In other situations, having relatives nearby can have a positive effect on the patient’s well-being. Any drug is prescribed after a comprehensive examination. The patient must be under the supervision of a doctor; many drugs can be addictive. After treatment, it takes another month to recover.

But vice versa, it is better to treat a nervous breakdown at home in women and men. We need to understand what led to this state. If, for example, constant tension arises at work, you need to take a vacation or quit altogether, there is nothing more valuable than health. If the cause is overwork, you need to build a more gentle schedule for yourself, which will include 8 hours of sleep, a walk in the fresh air during the day, and proper nutrition.

When treating at home, you need to consult with a therapist to draw up an action plan. Treatment within the walls of the home is aimed at relaxation and distracting the patient from the problem. The method is safe for life and health.

Persen

A sedative that has long been prescribed by doctors and has proven itself to be excellent. Persen contains three active ingredients: mint, valerian and lemon balm. They soothe and relieve spasms. Persen is prescribed for insomnia, increased nervous agitation, irritability, and sleep problems. It should be borne in mind that these nerve pills are not suitable for people with low blood pressure and those who have problems with the biliary tract. The tablets are easy to swallow and can be taken with or without food. Dosage – 2-3 pieces per day. For insomnia, you need to take Persen an hour before bedtime, 2-3 tablets. The drug has a cumulative effect, it is safe, and has no withdrawal effect. A sedative helps eliminate the “nervous lump” in the throat. Rare side effects include allergic manifestations, constipation and bronchospasm.

Effect

The effect can last from several hours to days. They typically cause physical depression, muscle relaxation and sedation due to various types of drugs, there are a number of other effects depending on what substance was taken. They inhibit most body functions and therefore significantly affect the ability to drive, operate machinery, and participate in tasks requiring muscle coordination. Here are some effects:

  • feeling of relaxation;
  • reduction of anxiety;
  • decreased intensity of physical sensations;
  • dizziness;
  • drowsiness;
  • slurred speech;
  • shallow breathing;
  • slow heart rate;
  • muscle dysfunction;
  • decreased dexterity;
  • impaired learning skills;
  • interruptions in memory.

Sometimes unexpected and paradoxical side effects occur, such as anxiety, nightmares and aggression.

Although sedatives should never be mixed with other substances, especially those that cause drowsiness: depressants such as ethanol, cold medicines and opiates (codeine, heroin). Fatal respiratory depression can occur if two of these substances are mixed. If someone is difficult to wake up and you suspect they have used medication, seek medical attention immediately.

Barbiturates and benzodiazepines

Barbiturates are non-selective CNS depressants that used to be the mainstay of treatment for sedation or sleep induction and maintenance. They have largely been replaced by benzodiazepines in modern medicine, primarily because they can cause tolerance, physical dependence, and severe withdrawal symptoms.

However, some barbiturates are still used as anticonvulsants (phenobarbital) and to induce anesthesia (thiopental). Representatives of this group are:

  1. Amobarbital (Amytal).
  2. Aprobarbital (Alurat).
  3. Butabarbital (Butizol).
  4. Mephobarbital (Mebaral).
  5. Methohexital (Brevital).
  6. Pentobarbital (Nembutal).
  7. Phenobarbitol (Luminal).
  8. Primidon (Misoline).
  9. Secobarbital (Seconal).
  10. Thiopental (Penotal).

Benzodiazepines are the most widely used group of sedatives. Because of their safety and improved effectiveness, they have largely replaced barbiturates as the drugs of choice in the treatment of anxiety.

They also have hypnotic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant effects, but do not exhibit analgesic or antipsychotic effects. Representatives of this group are:

  1. Ethyl alcohol or ethanol.
  2. Alprazolam (Xanax).
  3. Chloral hydrate (Somnote).
  4. Chlordiazepoxide (Librium).
  5. Chlorazepate (Tranxen).
  6. Clonazepam (Klonopin).
  7. Diazepam (Valium).
  8. Estazolam (Prosom).
  9. Flunitrazepam (Rohypnol).
  10. Flurazepam (Dalman).
  11. Lorazepam (Ativan).
  12. Midazolam.
  13. Nitrazepam (Mogadon).
  14. Oxazepam (Serax).
  15. Temazepam (Restoril).
  16. Triazolam (Halcion).

Afobazole

The active ingredient of Afobazole is fabomotizole (tranquilizer). This sedative is prescribed for autonomic disorders, anxiety, depression, and cognitive disorders. Afobazole is usually well tolerated, although it can sometimes cause headaches. Take the drug three times a day, 1 tablet after meals. The course of treatment with Afobazol is 2-4 weeks. The positive effect of the sedative occurs on the 5-7th day of treatment and persists after discontinuation of the drug for another 7-14 days. Patients write that Afobazole is well tolerated, does not cause drowsiness or decreased concentration, and does not cause muscle weakness, dependence, or withdrawal symptoms.

Specifics of treatment

Nervous breakdowns do not appear out of nowhere. This is a long-term disease that has not been treated for years, or prolonged stress that the patient has experienced. To get rid of an ordinary nervous breakdown, you need to reconsider your life, get rid of the cause - treat the underlying disease, limit your communication with those who bring you to such a state.

This lengthy process can take a month or even more. There are medications that will help the patient during periods of treatment. Those who are treated at home without a doctor’s prescription cannot even imagine the harm they are causing to their body.

The disorder appears for various reasons; the treatment of a nervous breakdown, especially in women, must be approached in a comprehensive manner.
